About this Item
A glossy visualization of the UAE's completed and planned road infrastructure, accompanied on the verso by a regional map extending from Mecca to the southern edge of Turkey and east to Muscat. The Automobile and Touring Club issued several maps during the 1970s and 1980s. Online searches show various examples held at 11 locations only, none of which are in the Middle East. Founded in 1965, the club is one of the oldest national-level groups in the UAE and introduced grand prix racing to the region. For the benefit of members, the map also identifies international airports, wells, oilfields, pipelines, and geological features. An approximate dating is given by the reference to Abu Dhabi's Meridien Hotel being under construction. The hotel was officially opened in 1979 by Sheikh Zayed and Elizabeth II. Versions given various dates are held at the Library of Congress, Colorado School of Mines, Northern Illinois University, Ball State University, Memorial University, and the universities of Michigan, Arizona, Glasgow, Exeter, Cambridge, and Oxford. Colour folding coated-paper map (595 x 845 mm), printed both sides, inset plans of Umm Al Qaiwain, Al Fujairah, Ajman, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Ras Al Khaimah, inset lists of amenities. Text in English and Arabic. Bright, light wear and soiling, toning at peripheries: a very good copy.
