First edition, first printing, of this study of the history, geography, economy, and culture of Bahrain. It was written in the aftermath of the discovery of oil "to provide the reader with the minimum of facts essential to an understanding of the problems in this part of the world" (p. 9). This work is split into general description and history. It also contains a family tree of the Sheikhs of Bahrain up to Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, pictured in the frontispiece. Octavo. Half-tone photographic frontispiece of the Sheikh of Bahrain, Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, three plates (one colour), map. Original brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt, yellow paper label to front cover lettered in black. Signature to front free endpaper, dated 1951, of one Lloyd Schwalt. Spine gilt a little tarnished: a near-fine copy.
