Foxing to edge of pages. Inscription inside front cover. Colour frontispiece, BW plates. Patrick Russ was the real name of Patrick O'Brian of Aubrey and Maturin fame. In this his second book, while still using his real name, Russ/O'Brian deals with animals and a realistic mode: Tunnicliffe's superb illustration of an elephant opposite p74, e.g. is captioned "paring away the Government number from the nail of his right fore-foot".
