iv, 162pp, [2]. Contemporary panelled calf, richly tool in gilt and blind, contrasting green morocco lettering-pieces, marbled edges. Rubbed, some surface loss, spine sunned. Marbled endpapers, internally clean and crisp. The first edition of English historian and ecclesiastic Henry Hart Milman's (1791-1868) dramatic poem, Belshazzar, upon which the influence of Byron can be clearly seen. Milman would go on to write The Martyr of Antioch (1822), which served as the primary influence for Arthur Sullivan's (1842-1900) 'Sacred Musical Drama' of the same name, first performed in 1880. Size: 8vo.

Established 2007, Antiquates Ltd is an Antiquarian bookseller with a large, custom built shop in the heart of the Dorset countryside. We sell fine and rare books from our Wareham shop, in catalogues, and via our website (www.antiquates.co.uk). Specialising in early printed books both English and Continental, fine English Literature, and books by, for, and about Women and Children, we nevertheless stock a wide range of works on paper from 1500-present - including modern first editions. Our bias is towards the unusual, the interesting and the important - and always have a good stock of rare books by local authors such as T.E.
