Printed wrappers, 8vo, vii, 107 pp, 6 pp publisher's catalogue, [1] p. Approximately 200 entries. De Vries notes that this is "a full-scale attempt to establish the basic details of Dickens's works. This bibliography appeared in various stages of minor revision through 1885, principally in sections not involving Shepherd's list of Dickens's printed works, a list that remained pretty constant through the 1882 and 1884 revisions. Because of its fuller listing of Dickens's works and editions of them published in Dickens's lifetime and because of its greater supply of details about those works, it is much more informative than the bibliographies of Forster and Cook. It contains, for example, the earliest attempt to list the original publication of the early writings that Dickens collected as Sketches by Boz missing only nine of sixty. Shepherd also identifies several additional minor works for the first time. Shepherd's bibliography contained three other sections - Letters, Speeches, and "Ana" (containing reviews of Dickens's works and a number of bibliographical and critical studies) - all of which he updated in the revised versions."
