"While it was never my intention to produce a bibliography of military and maritime literature printed before 1801, what is offered here comes fairly close to being just that. Many works have been omitted, of course, but I trust that the works presented here will provide students of the language a rich mine of information on the specialised vocabulary associated with warfare, fortification, tactics, military discipline, shipbuilding, naval terms, and signals."- From the introduction to Volume 18 Part III: "The material covered in these three volumes concerns principally the arts and sciences associated with mililary and maritime skills, both in war and peace. Military discipline figures largely for the simple reason that war is, by definition, only sucessfully carried out when individuality gives way to the demands of collective action. The sources for much of the writing of course, much dependent [sic] upon the literature of Grecce and Rome.It was never my intention to produce a bibliography of all the military and maritime arts and sciences: though the volume of material described in fact does constitute an important part of the whole literature as recorded in many of thc bibliographies listed here.
