First Jones edition; "one of the most important examples of the commercial decoration" of a titan of Victorian book design (McLean, p. 66). This copy has the gilt bookplate of fine-binding collector Paul Edward Chevalier (b. 1939). Owen Jones (1809-1874) was a leading figure in the Gothic Revival of illumination. In 1841, in collaboration with John Murray, he produced Ancient Spanish Ballads, the first of what McLean terms "illuminated books". These were gift books adorned with vivid medievalist manuscript decoration, and often used devotional texts. The success of Ancient Spanish Ballads led to Jones and the publishers collaborating again on his Book of Common Prayer. "The book was well printed by Vizetelly Brothers, and must have been a considerable undertaking, since it consists of over five hundred pages, all printed in two or three colours" (McLean, p. 89). Large octavo. With eight chromolithograph plates designed by Owen Jones, four wood-engraved plates of contemporary church scenes by J. C. Horsley and Henry Warren, wood-engraved reproductions of Old Master paintings to text, decorative borders and initials throughout designed by Jones, text printed in various colours. Original black straight-grain morocco over bevelled boards, flat spine lettered in gilt and blind-stamped with elaborate design incorporating a cross, boards framed with blind-stamped border with a fleur-de-lys, Franciscan cross, and flower design, three stylized gilt crosses to boards, gilt inner dentelles, new blue coated endpapers, edges gilt, two blue bookmarkers. Housed in a custom black cloth slipcase. Very mild rubbing and foxing, a near-fine copy. Seller Inventory # 182189
