First edition, the first full-colour facsimile of Ireland's greatest manuscript, number 1,071 of 1,480 copies. The commentary volume includes a foreword by Umberto Eco and forensic description of the manuscript's text, marginalia, pigments, illumination, script, and historical context. The original ninth-century Gospel book is held at Trinity College, Dublin. Together, 2 volumes, large quartos. Facsimile volume with contents entirely chromolithographic, pages trimmed and with die-cut holes replicating irregularities of original leaves. Commentary volume including 14 pp. colour illustrations and black-and-white illustrations in the text, transparent facsimile sheet loosely inserted between pp. 220-1. Facsimile volume: original white kidskin over bevelled boards, faux raised bands; housed in original black leatherette folding box, spine lettered in gilt, Irish knotwork designs in gilt and blind to front cover, insular-style silver metal furniture with gilt studs to front cover and edges. Commentary volume: original white quarter kidskin, smooth spine lettered in black, brown cloth sides; housed in original black cloth slipcase. Publisher's certificate loosely inserted; commentary volume with large black morocco presentation label to J. Y. Haberer, Chairman Credit Lyonnais, on occasion of the official opening of Woodchester House, Dublin, 25 May 1992. A few spots to white pigskin: near-fine.
