First edition. 8vo. xvi, 538, [2, publisher's advertisements] pp. Original dark blue ribbed cloth, spine lettered in gilt and ruled in blind, ruling continued to boards in blind with embossed lettering to front cover (some faint offsetting to half title, otherwise internally clean, light wear to tips of spine, corners gently bumped, withal a very good copy indeed). The first book by the distinguished British economist and statistician Sir Josiah Charles Stamp, first Baron Stamp (1880-1941), based on his doctoral thesis written under the supervision of A.L. Bowley at the London School of Economics. 'His doctoral thesis, which remains his most important work, exhibited immense knowledge of the changing law and conventions relating to British income tax and succeeded in charting the innumerable pitfalls which lay beneath the surface of published income-tax statistics, thereby laying sure foundations for their interpretation' (New Palgrave). 'As an economist, Stamp made a major contribution to the economics of taxation and to the understanding of tax returns as a statistical source.' In addition to his direct contributions to economics, Stamp also served in a series of prestigious public positions including Director of the Bank of England and President of the Royal Statistical Society as well as various notable advisory positions to the British government. Shipping costs are based on books weighing 2.2 LB, or 1 KG. If your book order is heavy or oversized, we may contact you to let you know extra shipping is required. All UK shipping is by Royal Mail special delivery which requires a signature; if you would prefer to use Royal Mail first class instead please contact us and we will reduce the shipping charge accordingly. Standard international shipping is by Royal Mail tracked international, and priority international shipping is by FedEx.
Please be aware that some items may require an export licence if leaving the United Kingdom. In this event, we will apply for the licence immediately but it may take several weeks for the application to be granted; we will keep you informed throughout the process.
