1913. First edition. xvi, 165pp., a tissue-guarded frontispiece, 21 black and white illustrations, and a 2-page catalogue. Noel Edward Noel-Buxton (1869-1948) was a British Liberal and later Labour politician. The Balkans played a very important part of Buxton's career. In 1912 war broke out between the newly independent Balkan countries of Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegro and Serbia and the Ottoman Empire. Buxton was Chairman of the Balkan War Relief Committee, and shortly after the war had broken out, he visited Bulgaria with Mabel St Clair Stobart, founder of the Women's Sick and Wounded Convoy Corps. During the First World War he went on a political mission with his brother Charles with the object of securing the neutrality of Bulgaria, and while in Bucharest in October 1914 an assassination attempt was made on them. In this memoir of his experiences serving with the Bulgarian army during the First Balkan War, he provides insight into the military strategies and political tensions of the time, as well as vivid descriptions of the landscape and people of Bulgaria. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and black titling on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the top of the spine and heavier bumping to the bottom of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with light foxing to the endpapers and first and last few pages. There are two creases running down the tissue-guard to the frontispiece and a name, place and date has been written on the front free endpaper. Seller Inventory # gBalkans03
