The trilogy follows the lives of the family patriarch Ahmad 'Abd al-Jawad and his family across three generations, in Cairo, Egypt, from 1919, the year of Egyptian Revolution against the British rule in Egypt, to almost the end of the Second World War in 1944. The three novels' Arabic titles are taken from the names of actual streets in Cairo, where major characters in the novels live. The three novels represent three eras of socio-political life, from religious conservative to Marxist radicalism. Palace Walk was first published in Arabic ( Bayn al-Qasrayn) in 1956; Palace of Desire ( Qasr al-Shawq), in 1957; and Sugar Street (Al-Sukkariyya), in 1957. The English translations were first published by Doubleday in 1990, 1991, and 1992, respectively. Palace Walk was translated by William M. Hutchins and Olive Kenny; Palace of Desire by Hutchins, Olive Kenny and Lorne Kenny; and Sugar Street by Hutchins, Olive Kenny and Angele Botros Samaan. The translations were overseen by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, an editor at Doubleday at the time, and Martha Levin. About the Author

Naguib Mahfouz was born in Cairo in 1911 and began writing when he was seventeen. His nearly forty novels and hundreds of short stories range from re-imaginings of ancient myths to subtle commentaries on contemporary Egyptian politics and culture. Of his many works, most famous is The Cairo Trilogy, consisting of Palace Walk (1956), Palace of Desire (1957), and Sugar Street (1957), which focuses on a Cairo family through three generations, from 1917 until 1952. In 1988, he was the first writer in Arabic to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. He died in August 2006.
