About this Item

Description:

Printed wrappers, 8vo, 62 pp, 2 plates. 811 lots. From the preface: "This superb collection was originally the property of James Norman, Esq., of Bromley, who was the ancestor of the present owner, and who died in 1787. The Collection was formed by Mr. James Norman between the years 1760 and 1780, and has remained practically in the same state since then. The portion now catalogued is specially rich in fine portraits by the early mezzotint engravers, and comprises splendid examples in fine early states by T. Beckett, A. Blooteling, J. Faber Sen. and Jun., W. Faithorne, J. Smith, G. White and others. The collection has special interest from the fact, which is apparent by comparison of the prints with Chaloner Smith's great work on British mezzotint portraits, that the author probably had access to this collection, and made use of it when compiling his work; for instance, in the case of the print by Godfrey Boy he appears specifically to describe the Norman print {see No. 69). The numbers given in the Catalogue refer to Chaloner Smith's work. In addition, there are in the collection many prints in fine early states, unrecorded in Chaloner Smith; where this is the case, it is, so far as possible, noted in the Catalogue. " Neatly ruled in blue with prices and buyers' names noted in ink, small tear to head of spine, spine-title added in manuscript, otherwise Good. Seller Inventory # ABE-51841
