FIRST BRITISH EDITION, 2 vols., 8vo, pp. [iii]-xvi, 356; [iii]-xiii, [iii], 331, [1], 31 [ads], [1] + frontispiece to each volume and 41 plates. Original grey pebbled cloth, boards blocked centrally in silver, spines lettered in gilt. A touch of spotting. Boards soiled and grubby, spines somewhat darkened, a little wear to edges. Notes on a journey around the world made by Scottish folklorist John Francis Campbell (1821-1885), which was first published in America the previous year. This copy is unusual in that it is bound as two volumes in grey cloth, which gives every indication of being a publisher?s binding, instead of the more common single-volume binding of green cloth. It bears a plate not mentioned in the plate list to the rear of vol. 1 - ?The Barber?s Shop? - but it matches the other plates and again, is clearly as issued.
