Issued two years after the landmark Code Civil, the Code de Procedure Civile served as a foundational pillar of the Napoleonic legal system, remaining in force in France until 1970. The Table Alphabetique bound alongside it is the essential companion index volume. The extensive annotations date from roughly 1810 to 1820, precisely tracking the early career of Eugene Marie Bonaventure Lucas de Peslouan, an attorney from a prominent Breton dynasty of lawyers and notaries. Rather than mere summary, Lucas de Peslouan's notes represent a rigorous intellectual engagement with the new law. Written on nearly every interleaf, his commentary spans from quick analytical phrases to dense paragraphs. He frequently cross-references laws from the Revolutionary era and early Empire, shapes procedural questions, and utilizes a practical Q&A format. Example from the text ("Proceedings Before the Courts"): "The claims directed against undivided successions in the national domain, do they fall under judicial or administrative jurisdiction?" Answer: "They must be prosecuted admi.
