About this Item
First edition. Octavo. 191 pages.Inscribed by the author on the title-page: ''Inscribed for Christopher Fry in affection and esteem - T.S. Eliot''. The recipient's ownership signature, dated 1936, is on the front free endpaper. A highly significant association copy, bringing together the two greatest English language verse dramatists of the century. It is presumably the case that the book was inscribed several years after it was first acquired by Fry, as the latter once told the theatre critic Michael Billington, 'I first met Eliot in 1939, and I remember asking him what I could do in wartime that didn't mean shooting people. He suggested the fire service, but I told him that I had no head for heights. Eliot said, ''You must specialise in basements.'' ' From the condition of the book it must be assumed that it was consulted by Fry on numerous occasions: damage to backstrip repaired; covers marked and rubbed; good; no dustwrapper.
