First edition, folio, xii, 101, [2, advert]pp., folding map of the Ashby-de-la-Zouch coal field, 7 folding lithograph profiles and sections of three coal pit shafts, 24 hand-coloured plates of sections of the Strata, 102 hand-coloured lithographic plates of fossils (numbered 1-87 and A1-A15), contemporary water-silk cloth, reback, corners worn, leather spine label, uncut. Edward Mammatt (1790–1860) was an English land agent, surveyor, and amateur geologist active in Leicestershire during the early 19th century. Although not a professional academic geologist, Mammatt was deeply involved in the practical management of estates and mineral rights, which brought him into close contact with the developing coal industry of the East Midlands. This, his major work, is one of the earliest systematic attempts to describe and interpret the geological structure of the Ashby Coal-Field in Leicestershire. The book gathers Mammatt's field notes, mining observations, and stratigraphic measurements, presenting them in a form intended to clarify the origins, arrangement, and economic potential of the region's coal-bearing strata.
