Sale held 27 January to 1 February 1902 at les Galeries du MM. Durand-Ruel. This is the first printing of the first edition. Published 1902. Printed and bound in Évreux, France, at Imprimerie de Charles Hérissey. 11.25 x 8.75 inches. 30 x 21 cm. Originally printed as a paperback; re-bound in medium brown buckram heavy-duty boards with the original paper wrappers bound in. Spine title in crisp gilt lettering. Unbumped spine head and tail, and fairly sharp corners. Slight spine lean. Text block firmly bound in. Plain pastedowns and FEPs. With iv, iii, and 363 numbered pages of text. Includes a section of netsuke nomenclature and a table of artists' names. Pages lightly toned at edges; a few pages with slight tears. With numerous full-page, sepia-tone or duo-tone plates on heavy-weight paper, each plate with a transparent protective tissue sheet facing it. A few tissue sheets with creasing, the rest appear fine. Illustrations include: wood sculpture, lacquer ware, inro, Korean and Japanese pottery, Chinese and Japanese bronzes, smoking utensils, Chinese and Japanese painting, and tsuba. With a pull-out plate at p. 280. The title page and the backs of a few plates with the neat red ink stamp in German of the Japaninstitut (Japanisch-Deutsches Kultur-Institut). With prices handwritten next to many of the items. Else no marks. An unusually clean and attractive copy, and quite tight. Respectfully read. Scarce in any condition. A Very Good Plus copy. 6.25 lbs. weight. Tadamasa Hayashi was a well-known Japanese art collector based in Paris, establishing an art firm there in 1883 and becoming the chief commissioner of the Japanese exhibit at the 1900 Paris Exposition owing to his artistic expertise and political connections both in France and Japan. The Japan Institute was founded in 1925 in Berlin. It was the first independent Japanese institute in the western world. Seller Inventory # 008040
