First edition thus, part of the publisher's "Library of Old Authors". Smith issued numerous reprints of early tracts, such as Puritan discipline works, the ballads of Captain Cox, and reports of 15th-century battles. This collection was followed in 1862 by a volume on the witch trials of New England. The tracts were printed separately and have separate title pages, but were published as a single edition with a collected contents page. Octavo (209 x 129 mm). Portrait frontispiece. Contemporary black half calf, brown morocco spine label, marbled boards, brown endpapers, edges speckled red, binder's ticket of W. Isacke, London, on front pastedown. Contemporary shelf label on front pastedown; a handful of neat annotations to contents. Binding rubbed, front inner hinge cracked, contents lightly foxed and browned: a very good copy.
