About this Item

Description:

First edition of this seminal paper on artificial intelligence, outlining the first articulation of the Turing test. Drawing on his extensive theoretical knowledge and his first-hand experience of computing machinery during the Second World War, this remains "the most lucid and far-reaching expression of his philosophy" (ODNB). Computing Machinery and Intelligence tackles the question of machine minds by employing a behaviourist approach. Rather than assessing the nature of artificial intelligence itself, the Turing test examines its capacity to match human behavioural patterns. "The test involves two parties, 'X' and 'Y', who engage in a conversation by teletype. Human X cannot know whether Y is a machine or a person. If X believes that Y is responding like a person after a specified period of time, and Y turns out to be a machine, then that machine may be defined as having the capacity to 'think'" (Origins of Cyberspace). In considering the possible objections to his test, Turing goes far beyond the purely mathematical, with extensive sections on the theological and cognitive difficulties with his claim. Origins of Cyberspace 936; Tomash & Williams T 60. Octavo. Original wrappers printed in black. Housed in custom red buckram solander case, spine and front cover lettered in gilt. Light creasing and chipping to wrappers, faint toning to spine, contents fresh and crisp: a very good copy indeed of a fragile work. Seller Inventory # 183754
