First edition, first impression, of Hardy's first book, a work that was to become the standard text on the subject at Cambridge for many generations. Hardy became "generally recognized as the leading English mathematician of his time. The standard of mathematic rigour in England at that time was not high, and Hardy set himself to give the ordinary student a course in which elementary analysis was for the first time done properly" (DNB). Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Housed in custom red cloth box. Neat ownership signature on front free endpaper, occasional neatly pencilled mathematical annotations, evidencing a close reading of the text. Spine ends and corners bumped and gently worn, cloth minimally sunned along front cover and with a few faint marks, the binding tight and square; endpapers browned, contents generally clean bar some light running browning and damp stain near gutter, pages lightly ripppled: a very good copy.
