FIRST EDITION. Half title, front. Orig. red embossed vertical-grained cloth, blocked & lettered in gilt; spine faded to brown & sl. worn at head & tail, small black mark to front upper hinge. Pencil inscription to half title: 'Walter Loftus, 99 Tulse Hill, SL2, London', ink signature of W. Loftus on first text leaf. Not in Glover & Greene. Hubin p.112. Down on her luck, Winifred Kestern answers a mysterious advertisement in a paper for an 'accompanist' only to be greeted by Nora, an enigmatic old school friend she has not seen in years. Once hired, Winnie finds herself performing with Nora in grand houses around London, but after each event it seems that valuable jewels have mysteriously gone missing. William Carlton Dawe, 1865-1935, Australian novelist and short-story writer who wrote over 70 titles during his career including works of adventure, romance, mystery and crime.
