Item description from seller

In two volumes. 91, [1]; 93-121pp. Stitched in blue wrappers. Slight rubbing to extremities. Very occasional light spotting. Inked inscription to recto of FFEP of first volumeI: 'Master Thomas Knight from his friend Henry Clifford. Illybrooke Oct. 19. 1843'. The first edition, printed at the Roman Catholic seminary of Prior Park, of a discourse intended to inspire the Catholics of Cannington with the 'miracle of the instantaneous cure' of Henry Clifford at Freiburg in 1843. Clifford, suffering from a wound which caused lameness in one foot, touched the Seamless robe of Argenteuil, one of several cloth pieces claiming to be the tunic of Christ, and was immediately healed. It would seem that the work was produced with the hope that the event would be formally considered a miracle by the Church, indeed the discourse concludes with incredulity that a Protestant gentleman present had avowed the cure as miraculous, yet the Church had as of yet not. COPAC records a single copy of the complete text (BL); OCLC records copies of the first part at just three locations (Emory, NLA, and NLW). Size: 8vo.

Store description

Established 2007, Antiquates Ltd is an Antiquarian bookseller with a large, custom built shop in the heart of the Dorset countryside. We sell fine and rare books from our Wareham shop, in catalogues, and via our website (www.antiquates.co.uk). Specialising in early printed books both English and Continental, fine English Literature, and books by, for, and about Women and Children, we nevertheless stock a wide range of works on paper from 1500-present - including modern first editions. Our bias is towards the unusual, the interesting and the important - and always have a good stock of rare books by local authors such as T.E. Lawrence and Thomas Hardy; we are just the place if you're looking for an extra-special gift for a wedding, birthday, anniversary or graduation. (Open Wednesday - Saturday, 10am-4pm)
