FIRST EDITION, one of only 25 copies printed for private distribution. Octavo, pp., [4], ccxxxiii, [1]. Vignette to title-page. Publishers' brown cloth with bevelled boards, gilt titles and decoration to spine and quadruple border in blind to boards. Spine tips and corners a little worn; scattered light foxing, mainly to prelims, otherwise contents clean with no annotation or inscriptions. A very good copy indeed. Rare and comprehensive study of the liturgy and rituals of the church, including hymnals, Bibles, psalters and breviaries, by Catholic convert William Maskell (1814-1890), the eminent liturgical scholar. COPAC locates 3 of the 25 copies, held at the Universities of Cambridge and Chichester, and Kings College London. ODNB.
