About this Item
Two volumes, bound as one. 288; [4], 289-447pp, [1]. Recently bound in crimson calf over 'blood-spatter' effect marble boards. Small strip of loss to foot of title, else a fine copy. The rare first Czech edition of Irish novelist and acting manager Bram Stoker's (1847-1912) infamous vampire novel Dracula, translated by J.H. Khun, of whom little is known other than his involvement in the early Esperanto movement. The translation of this Gothic cornerstone into Czech preceded both French (1920) and Dutch (1928) translations, and coincided with the break-up of the Austro- Hungarian empire, parts of which - it should not be forgotten - provide the early plot's setting and the eponymous characters origin story. Published in a two volume paperback which featured decorative illustrated wrappers, but presented here in a fitting if rather interpretive modern binding with 'blood- spatter' marbled boards. Very few copies appear to have survived either in commerce or institutionally; other than this copy none seem to appear in the auction records, and OCLC locates a single copy at the Czech national library. Size: 8vo. Seller Inventory # AQ30550
