Octavo. 361 pp. 2 pp of publisher's advertisements. Green cloth in good order, the spine a little faded, cloth at the top and bottom of the spine softened. A small area of colour loss at the foot of the spine. Slight dustiness to the top edge of the text block. The endpapers are browned. No inscriptions. A very good copy of this much-beloved but elusive first, rarely seen in the original cloth. Elizabeth Von Arnim was born, Mary Annette Beauchamp [1866-1941] in Australia. In 1891 she married an aristocratic, German widower. After his death, she became the lover of H G Wells for several years. Enchanted April tells the story of four women, each troubled by marriage or memories, who together rent a castle in the Italian town of Portofino for a month. During their time there they come to find peace in each other's company and the tranquillity of their situation. A book which has cast a spell over its readers and the audiences of its several adaptations for stage and screen for a hundred years.
