About this Item
An Introduction to Entomology, by James Duncan, ed. by William Jardine (Edinburgh: W. H. Lizars, 1840), pp. 331. 8vo. Half leather, with marbled boards, end papers and all edges, spine divided into five compartments with labels and gilt decoration, volume numbered I in Roman numerals on the spine (numbered according to its position in Jardine's entomological series as opposed to the Naturalist's Library as a whole). Edges slightly worn, top of the spine slightly scuffed. Minimal hint of cracking at the front hinge (inside), binding still very solid. Slight foxing, mainly at first and last few pages. Contemporary bookplate of George Jacob Bosanquet Esq. at the first end paper. Otherwise a very good copy. Complete with illustrations: 36 plates (32 hand-coloured), 1 hand-coloured title page, 1 b/w portrait (of Baron de Geer); the plates engraved and coloured after drawings by John Hope Stewart, a well-known and important naturalist illustrator in his day who contributed to a number of volumes in this series, the entomologist John O. Westwood and others. The lettering on the spine reads: 'Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Entomology. I.'. Seller Inventory # 034123
