During the month of October 1870 two terrible hurricanes occurred in Cuba, which devastated the Western department, leaving many families in misery and more than 800 people dead in Matanzas. The work includes a critical list of the hurricanes that have occurred in Cuba, from 1494 to 1870. The 4 folded plates represent maps that show the path of the hurricanes as they pass through the island. This book is considered the most important documentary source of the so-called San Marcos hurricane. Manuel Fernández de Castro (1825-1895) was a Spanish mining engineer, known mainly for his studies on the geology of the Island of Cuba. He made investigations on very diverse topics, from improvements in railway lines to accident prevention to fossil studies and prospecting mining. He also contributed to the creation of the geological map of Spain.
