Charming make-your-own-scene book featuring humanized bugs and frogs and a host of their fairy and gnome friends, issued as loose figures to be fit into the color plates. The fashionable and fun-loving humanized insects of this title recall the art of Else Wenz-Viëtor, "the most famous German illustrator of picture books for children during the 1920s and 1930s" (Zipes). Her work experienced a bit of a resurgence in the 1950s, with several of her books being reissued. Each page of text here faces a fabulous full-page color illustration with slots to place a variety of paper doll-like cutouts of animals and fantasy figures, encouraging the reader to make their own creative illustration. A lovely example of an interactive book. 9.5'' x 12.25''. Original color pictorial boards, cloth-backed. Illustrated in color and black-and-white throughout. Eight leaves, bound concertina-style. 54 loose character cutouts. Boards slightly warped with light edgewear. Occasional mild foxing to leaves, lacking some character cutouts. Clean and bright. Lacking some cutouts, else very good plus. …
