A pioneering anthropologist and folklorist, Andrew Lang was the first to compile a serious, critical survey of ghost stories. This First Edition of his work presents scores of well-attested tales from civilisations around the world about visitations from spirits. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION Hardcover in good condition throughout bound in blue cloth printed in a black and silver art nouveau design. Corners very slightly bumped, spine ends showing a little shelf wear, spine lettered in gold gilt includes black illustration. End papers clean, age toned. Front paste down displays bookplate of Diana Gurney (quite probably the printmaker and teacher who studied at Westminster School of Art, taught at at St Martin's School of Art and produced a collection of wood engravings now housed in the British Museum). Front free end paper is dated 'Oct 11th 1900' to verso. Printed on heavy wove paper, top edges gilt, a little age toned in good condition. Contents clean throughout, leaves a little age toned to edges. 301 pp. followed by 32 pp. advertising. Overall a very good copy. Laid in is a contemporary paper clipping on 'experiments with a view to testing certain theories … on the subject of dreams' possibly dated in pencil 1902.
