First Edition. Octavo [22.5 cm] Dark blue cloth with title and bands gilt stamped on the backstrip. Very good. Bookplate on the front pastedown. English translation of Father Pedro Font's account of his travels from San Miguel de Horcasitas, Mexico, to San Francisco, California, and back between September 29, 1775, and June 2, 1776. Font traveled with a party under Juan Bautista de Anza, which included settlers bound for Monterey, Spanish soldiers, and other religious figures. Font provides the distances he travels (in leagues), offers notes about interesting occurrences, records his approximate latitude and longitude, and describes the scenery and settlements along the way. He often writes of the other members of the traveling party, who include soldiers, families, and priests, and comments on the group's encounters with Native Americans and on relationships between various groups of Native Americans. Hardcover. Condition: g to vg. First edition. Quarto. xix, 552pp., 20 plates, 1 folding map. Original blue cloth with gilt lettering and ruling on spine. Frontispiece photograph. Translated from the original Spanish manuscript of Pedro Font, With Anza to California, and edited by Bolton. "The comments on the trail contained in the footnotes of this work are based on personal reconnoissance; for I have retracted exactly or approximately Anza's entire itinerary. The excellence of the diaries (Font's) is attested by the fact that I have been able to identify practically every water hole and camp site. Most of the photographic illustrations represent scenes along the way. They have been chosen to show the trail as Font and Anza saw it, rather than to exhibit its present day cultural aspects." (Bolton). Illustrated with striking b/w photographs, facsimiles of Font's diary and plans, including a folding map at rear. Binding with light wear along edges and some light water-staining. Ex Libris of George and Anne Barnett on inside front cover. Block slightly age-toned. Binding in overall good, interior in very good condition. Seller Inventory # 47731
