Rebound in attractive cream boards, old covers laid down, black & red ink titles & illustration. Internally, half title, title in red & black inks, [4], (v-xiii), [1], 15-30, [1], a.e.g., faintest of edge browning, printed by Billings of Guildford, with an introduction by English hymn writer and clergyman, William H. Draper. A lecture by Lewis Carroll delivered a public audience of clergy in Derbyshire in Oct. 1884. After the speech, Dodgson gave the script to Draper, who went on to have the work published several years later. First edition, having previously appeared of Harper's Monthly Magazine, New York, May 1906, pp. 937-9. From the collection of Lillian May (Stokes) Gillespie (1869-1915) was an independently wealthy socialite from the Stokes family of New York, a line of enormously successful financiers and merchants.
