One of two variants of the first edition of this satirical verse directed at Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, in which he attacks the extravagance, superficiality and immorality of aristocratic culture. The bitterness visible in his satires may have stemmed from his unfortunate marriage in 1776 to Maria Foster, a former mistress of Lord Beauchamp. Combe seems to have expected a payment from Beauchamp that he never received. In this edition: p.iii, line 3: Reason, are. This variant not in the BL or Cambridge. Seller Inventory # 91583
