First edition, Uncorrected Proof. 165 pages. The book is quite firmly bound in the publisher's greenish brown wraps, lettered and decorated in black and white, the covers are rubbed, lightly marked and with creasing to the corners, the spine strip is creased and sunned, with some small chips and closed tears at the spine ends. The text block is slightly toned and marked with some dog-eared page corners, there is scuffing to the inside front cover, presumably indicating the removal of a bookplate or publisher's label. McEwan's first published book, a collection of short stories, several of which have received cinematic adaptation. The uncorrected proof, which precedes the first edition, would have been limited to a small number of copies for an author's debut, and is rare in commerce.
