First Edition. In two volumes, complete. Post 8vo (200 mm); [xx], [166] + vi, [224] pp. With 120 coloured plates. Original green cloth, with gilt lettering to spine and blocking of an Alpine plant to front boards. Top edge of the pages gilt. Original burgundy red endpapers with the bookseller ticket of Truslove, Hanson and Comba, publishers and importers, New York, and an elegant gift inscription in inked hand: "Lily Murray, Xmas 1904, From Annie - A reminder of happy walks together". All plates clean and bright, no signs of foxing or soiling of any kind. An exemplary set. Fine copy. Alfred William Bennett was a British botanist and publisher best known for his work on the flora of the Swiss Alps, cryptogams, and the Polygalaceae or Milkwort plant family. This book describes the plants of Switzerland and of the Alpine species of the adjacent mountain districts of France, Italy and Austria, including the Pyrenees.
