From the preface: ".this auction may constitute one of the last opportunities for collectors of America's historic figures to metaphorically stand upon the shoulders of one of the most colorful and discerning of great American collectors. Christie's is honored to have been selected to handle this historic dispersal for the Forbes family. As in Part One, the present catalogue has been arranged chronologically, beginning with colonial and Revolutionary War manuscripts, followed by presidential letters and documents, in order of their administrations. Wartime letters of Ulysses S. Grant and Dwight D. Eisenhower are placed chronologically within the sequence of letters of the sitting presidents when the letters were written (Lincoln and Franklin D. Roosevelt). Letters of historical figures who never served as President have been placed in the appropriate sequence in the presidential chronology.
