Item description from seller

First edition. Octavo. 282pp. Red cloth. Light foxing on the fore-edge and few pages of text, else a near fine copy in near very good dust jacket which is modestly rubbed and soiled, a half-inch chip at the crown, and with two large, neat paper-tape mends on the verso. A mystery novel [*Hubin,* p. 350], cited by Alexander Woollcott on his list of the "best mysteries" for the White House Library. "There is murder in this book, yet it is emphatically not a murder story. It is a story which happens to contain the elements which are naturally enough to be found in the domain of detectives." - from the dust jacket. Rare, especially in dust jacket. *OCLC* locates five copies; none in the U.S.
