Contemptuous of official escape committees, he refused to inform them of his plans and even went so far as to organize his own private supply of forged documents from England until, on one occasion, he simply walked out of an escape-proof camp disguised as a Russian soldier." "It is a record of what one ingenious and courageous man can do no matter how heavy the odds." Calnan joined the RAF before he was 18. From 1950 Chief Test Pilot at RAF Farnborough, and command of a Meteor Night-fighter squadron. Calnan left the service in 1958.
