Item description from seller

(London: Jonathan Cape 1964). First UK Edition. VARIANT COPY BOUND IN BLACK EXCELIN CLOTH WITH, HOWEVER, NO BLUE-RUBBER-STAMP MOTIF AND NO BLIND 'DOWNGRADED TO DECLASSIFIED BOX TO THE UPPER BOARD. Publisher's black cloth-effect paper ('Excelin') over boards without blocking to the front cover, lettered in GILT to the spine. The scarce plain black cloth with gilt lettering is a variant binding, possibly a trial or conceivably a second state. It is estimated by Jon Gilbert (the authority on Len Deighton) that between 1 in 10 were bound in this way and that the cloth is different on the variant copy (using Excelin as opposed to regular Millskin). This is a near fine copy with exceptionally bright and clean boards. No inscriptions. Very clean interior. A couple of faint splashes to the bottom edge. The dustwrapper is complete and is NOT price-clipped and is a lovely, clean, close to fine example. Rare. Photographs/scans available upon request.
