CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Covers lightly soiled, minor rubbing on edges. Interior is clean and tight; former owner's bookplate on endpaper. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: James Harvey Mathes, was born near Dandridge, Jefferson County, TN., June 29, 1841. At the outbreak of the Civil War he was appointed Sergeant-Major of the 37th TN. Regiment, C.S.A., organized under Col. William H. Carroll at Knoxville, and in which he afterwards became Adjutant. He was frequently detached for special service and staff duty, a staff officer in Genl. Bates' Brigade and participated in some hard service. He was in many of the bloodiest engagements of the west, from Fishing Creek, KY., Jan. 19, 1862 to the campaign from Dalton to Atlanta in 1864, and lost a leg and had a horse shot from under him, July 22, 1864, in front of Atlanta, GA., which ended his active military career. This publication is part of Appleton s Great Commanders Series; this being one of three biographies on Confederate generals. Quite scarce and not often offered for sale. REFERENCES: NEVINS II pg 75: An attempt to portray Forrest s life from early youth to his death, but with almost sole emphasis on his military service. . Seller Inventory # 1223046
