Description:
1862. First edition. A poresentation page with engraved design, vii, 120pp. plus a double-page colour map in the first part and 128pp. plus an appendix with 48 pages in the second part, and 6 engraved illustrations within the text. This book is in two parts. The first, on The Geographical Distribution of Material Wealth, is based on a lecture given by the famous Scottish cartographer A.K. Johnston in April 1862. The second part consists of notes on the history of the Merchant Company of Edinburgh which were prepared by A.K. Mackie. The book is bound in the original brown cloth covered thin card boards with the fore edge overlapping the contents in yapp style. There are remains of a gold paper title label on the spine (possibly not original) and there is a gold emblem on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear on the boards and wear to the cloth on the corners. There is a small bit of damage to the cloth on the bottom rear spine corner. Parts of the title label on the spine are missing and there is wrinkling to the cloth on the spine. The contents are tight and clean with details of officers of the Merchant Company of Edinburgh pasted onto the front fixed endpaper, apparently as issued, and a name and date (1862) written on the second front free endpaper.
