H. Sheikh Sir Abdullah al Salim Al Sabah, and a genealogical table showing the lineage of the Sabah family. Ex libris the Royal United Services Institute with their label to front free endpaper and half-title. The Royal United Services Institute is a defence and security think tank with its headquarters in London, United Kingdom. It was founded in 1831 by the Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley. Some very light wear to jacket and cloth, some minor toning to endpapers, generally a very good copy. "How many people know that two out of every three cars in Britain run on petroleum from Kuwait? Or that the withdrawal of Kuwaiti investments, and the loss of profits from its oil, would smash the sterling area and cause an economic crisis in the West? That this tiny state, linked to Britain by trade and strategy since the Elizabethans, is an overseas commitment for which the British nation would have to fight? Kuwait is poised at the crossroads of the world, coveted by Great Powers and fanatical Arab neighbours alike. It is the richest place in the world for its size, and in 1962 Sheikh Abdullah exchanged feudalism for democracy; the most enlightened step ever taken by an Eastern potentate. Its progress from rags to riches has happened in the last ten years, and in another ten years it expects to become 'the Wall Street of the Orient'. Ralph Hewins, who tells the dramatic story of this fabulous state, is the biographer of Gulbenkian Mr. Five Per Cent and of J. Paul Getty. In a forth- right examination he criticizes British Middle East policy since Lawrence, condemns the 1961 British Expedition to Kuwait, and has something to say about the machinations of oil companies. He has explored the approaches to Kuwait by land, sea and air, has visited its five oil concessions, and is well quali- fied to tell us this Arabian Nights story of the land of superlatives - Kuwait, flashpoint of the Middle East" (dust-jacket).
