First edition of the first textually accurate printed version of the Magna Carta, edited by the greatest legal scholar of the age - "a work of the highest importance for the historian and the constitutional lawyer" (Walker, p. 136). The volume contains the texts of 14 medieval documents, tracing the history of the Magna Carta from the Articles of the Barons in 1215 to the confirmation of the charter by King Edward I in 1300. It represents a pioneering piece of historical scholarship, based on the examination of the original documents. Blackstone "was able to establish that the 1215 Magna Carta was significantly different from the version entered on the Statute Roll in 1297 (itself derived from the 1225 Magna Carta). Blackstone based his edition of the 1215 Magna Carta on the facsimile of the charter made by John Pine, collated with a copy preserved in the Red Book of the Exchequer. The Great Charter was not only a scholarly tour de force but a considerable aesthetic and technical achievement. Sold for the princely sum of 15 shillings, it was richly illustrated with detailed engravings of royal seals and historical scenes. The book's collation of the documents was at once representative of the humanist tradition of antiquarian legal scholarship, stretching back to the 16th century, and of more contemporary Enlightenment trends, which brought rigorous editorial methodologies to hitherto confused areas of study" (BL website). ESTC T143723; Rothschild 406. David Walker, The Oxford Companion to Law, 1980. Quarto in half sheets (337 x 261 mm). Engraved dedication leaf with the arms of the earl of Westmoreland, historiated initials, 10 large engravings of seals to the text, 2 intricately engraved tailpieces by John Sebastian Miller. Recent red calf, black morocco label, richly gilt in compartments, earlier marbled endpapers preserved (restored at inner hinges). Bookplate of William Wrightson (1676-1760), the builder of Cusworth Hall in Yorkshire. Aside from occasional light spotting and offsetting from engravings, an excellent, clean copy.
