First edition of this collaborative guide by the father and son botanical duo. George Lindley (1769-1835) was a pomologist who ran a commercial nursery garden in Norwich; his son, John, went on to become an eminent botanist. A fellow of the Royal, Linnean, and Geological societies and the chair of botany at UCL, John Lindley (1799-1865) was a proponent of Jussieu's "natural" system, in opposition to Linnaeus's more "artificial" taxonomy. He authored numerous botanical works according to this outlook, along with editing the horticultural department of the Gardener's Chronicle and contributing to the Botanical Register. Provenance: William Russell (1809-1872), 8th Duke of Bedford, with his armorial bookplate. His cousin and successor, Francis Russell, 9th Duke of Bedford, made extensive agricultural innovations to his Woburn Abbey estate and became President of the Royal Agricultural Society in 1880. Octavo (226 x 146 mm). Near-contemporary green half morocco, flat spine lettered and ruled in gilt, gilt monogram of Dukes of Bedford at head, marbled covers, endpapers, and edges. Spine toned, wear to extremities, covers a little rubbed, marks to pp. 290-6: a very good copy.
