1st Edition. 2 vols. Sm. 4to. [8], 424, [8], 446, Errata leaf. Half titles present. Decorative tail piece. Pp.1/2 of volume 2 crudely taped to head, W.H. Wayne in manuscript to head of title pages, some browning, with Maria Downer and M. Downer to head of front f.e.ps., ex.-libris Samuel Joynes, contemporary double gilt rule edged speckled calf, some loss to corners minor marking and wear, hinges cracking though firm, gilt lettered title labels to spines with faded gilt compartments. Todd p.198; Jessop pp.29-30; ESTC T82467 With a half-title to each volume, and a final errata leaf in vol.2. Vol.1 appeared in fact in 1761. In later editions the contents were incorporated into the 'The history of England, from the invasion of Julius Cæsar to . 1688.' . His sails set, Hume completed the History with two more volumes, extending the narrative from Julius Caesar to Henry VII; these appeared late in 1761 [as the above], though bearing the date 1762. While Hume continued in these volumes to emphasize the discontinuities in English constitutional history, he also showed that he could 'whig it with the best' when it came to celebrating King Alfred's laws or Magna Carta (Pocock, 245). As a whole, The History of England, from the Invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution in 1688, as the complete enterprise was known from 1762, was a remarkable testimony to the coherence of English history across its entire period, despite the evident changes which had occurred in its form of government. But the change of title was an acknowledgement that the same story could not be written of Great Britain, or indeed of Scotland . ODNB. US$466. Seller Inventory # 290024

Light general toning and occasional marks throughout. Heavy wear to original boards, now restored to a robust, attractive condition. Very good. Written in four discreet segments totalling six volumes between 1754 and 1762, Hume's great survey of English history stands alongside Gibbon's 'History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire' as one of the defining works of Enlightenment literature. Between 1754 and 1757 Hume published the 'modern' portion of his History, which was to become volumes V and VI of the finished series, printed on title page as "Vol.I" and "Vol.II". The remaining stock of the first volume, published in Edinburgh and entitled The History of Great Britain, was taken over in 1756 by the London publisher Millar, who then undertook the printing of the second volume and followed through covering the subsequent instalments. Hume's reverse procedure took him from the accounts of the times of James II back to Julius Caesar's England, and the project was completed in 1762. Seller Inventory # 70952

Seller: Rudi Thoemmes Rare Books, Bristol, United Kingdom
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First editions of the first four volumes (Chuo 47, 1-4), with the final two volumes in second edition (not in Chuo). 'Hume published his History in reverse chronological order, beginning with the Stuart monarchs (1754, 1757), moving to the House of Tudor (1759), and ending with the earlier periods (1762). The retrograde appearance of the volumes itself became a matter of discussion for several critics. Once finished, the volumes were republished as complete sets in the proper chronological order. Hume intended to continue his History past the period of the Restoration, but his plans were never fulfilled. He initially hesitated for fear that the "prejudices" against his former volumes had not yet subsided (Hume to Andrew Miller, January 14, 1765)' (James Fieser, Early Responses to Hume s History of England, Thoemmes Press 2003, xiv). PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 6 volumes, 4to, with the half titles, viii, 424; viii, 446, [1]; viii, 402; iv, 403-739, [1]; viii, 464; [ii], v, 457 pp., uniform contemporary calf with contrasting labels (numbered in chronological order rather than order of publication), title labels renewed, some scrapes to covers and wear at spine ends, front joint of first volume cracked but holding, some other joints beginning to split at ends, armorial bookplates of John White, occasional light browning and spotting, a well-preserved and attractive set.
