Third state of the first American edition, with the publisher's device to the title page and the list of illustrations corrected. Octavo. Publisher's hessian cloth, lettered blue with a red vignette of a bowing Hobbit to the upper cover. Two small fragments of the original dustwrapper loosely laid in. Map endpapers, with the Map of Wilderland to the front endpapers and Thror's Map to the rear, colour frontispiece, three further colour plates, one black and white plate, and eight black and white illustrations. An ex-library copy, with the stamps, tickets and shelfmarks of the Osceola Public Library. Recased, with thick tape repairs to joints. A little rubbed externally, some browning and paper flaws internally, a shallow chip to the fore-edge of p.119. Seller Inventory # 882
