First edition. Two volumes bound as one. Comprising 29 pages of titles and a memoir of the author, 22 pages of Introduction and Contents, then 401 pages and Errata, and 5 pages of titles and Contents, then 388 pages. Each with a folding map to the front, but lacking the 4 engraved plates. Bound in fairly recent half-calf, decorated in gilt and blind, with a gilt lettered red leather title label, over earlier, probably original russet coloured cloth covered boards, with the Isle of Man arms in gilt to the front board. All edges of the text block are marbled and there are Victorian style greenish black coated endpapers front and rear. The binding is firm, the leather is lightly rubbed, the cloth is slightly marked and rubbed, and the corners are a trifle bumped. The text block is slightly marked, with minor spots of foxing, the two maps have been repaired, the first with both tape and tissue, causing tape burns which have offset to the preceding page, the latter with tissue only.
