About this Item
4to. 1221pp. A huge and magisterial work and the first comprehensive attempt to catalogue the birds of Ceylon. Originally issued in parts and here bound together with 33 hand-coloured plates by Keulemans (one missing), one coloured plate of eggs with a duplicate of the same, and a map showing bird distribution. This copy also has an inscription on the endpaper to a Miss Fletcher from the author's sister. The binding is workmanlike to say the best in heavy purple boards. Many of the plates which should appear later in the book have been bound in earlier on, some of these earlier plates in particular have some staining, though there are still many which are as clean, crisp and bright as they day they were coloured. There are occasional short tears to pages, the page edges are a little ragged, the coloured map in particular is rather darkened and nicked all round its edges. Size: Quarto. Category: Animals & Birds; Seller Inventory # 75751
