FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp., xxxix, 467; vi 902, continuous pagination. Contains a total of 12 plates of various drawings of scenes from 'The Hobbit' spread between the two volumes. Publisher's black cloth with title in bronze to spines in unclipped, pictorial dust-jackets bearing the image of Smaug the Dragon and the Misty Mountains (vol 1) and the Misty Mountains by night (vol 2). Both fine copies. A study of Tolkien's 'The Hobbit'; the work contains several old drafts, lost drawings and a plethora of literary analysis published here for the first time. As well as a scholar of Tolkien, Rateliff is also the author behind several tabletop role playing game modules, including the Lord of the Rings TTRPG and several Dungeons and Dragons Adventure books.
