Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a study of the history of the United States Navy from its colonial beginnings through conflicts with pirates and the Barbary States through the Civil War. The author traces the development of the American naval tradition from its humble origins in individual colonial fleets, to the point at which it became a predominant and technologically advanced world force. The author examines the various themes found in naval history, such as the tension between technological advancement and naval strategy, the role of political will in naval affairs, and the relationship between naval strength and national identity. The concluding chapters consider the future course of American naval development in light of its past experiences. This book makes an important contribution to the understanding of the role that sea power has played in American history and the evolution of US naval thinking over time. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
