Nice condition set of the "History of the Rise and Fall of the Slave Power in America" by Henry Wilson. Complete set in three volumes. Published by James R. Osgood and Company in New York. Volume I - 1872 1st edition; Volume II - 1874 2nd edition; Volume III - 1877 1st edition. Bound in the publisher's original green cloth with gilt lettering on the front covers and spines. The set is an early history of the Civil War. Hefty set - the volumes contain 670, 720, and 774 numbered pages, respectively. Each volume contains an Index at the back. Henry Wilson served as Vice President of the United States under the second term of President Ulysses S. Grant. He was considered a "Radical Republican" and was a strong opponent of slavery. Wilson devoted his energies to the destruction of "Slave Power," the faction of slave owners and their political allies which anti-slavery Americans saw as dominating the country. His experience as a militia general, organizer, commander of a Union Army regiment, and chairman of the Senate military committees enabled him to assist the Abraham Lincoln administrations in the organization and oversight of the Union Army and Union Navy. He successfully authored bills that outlawed slavery in Washington, D.C., and incorporated African Americans in the Union Civil War effort in 1862. From the author's Preface: "I propose to write a history of the beginning and growth, the expansion and extinction, of slavery; also of the development and extirpation of the Slave Power. This work will be comprised of three volumes of some one hundred and thirty chapters, and about two thousand pages. The first and second volumes will trace slavery and portray its influences from its introduction in 1620 to the opening of the Civil War. The third volume will describe that series of measures by which slavery was extinguished and the Slave Power broken, the Union reconstructed on the basis of freedom, and citizenship, with civil and political rights, assured to all." Condition: The covers and spines are clean with only a small stain spot on the back cover of vol III, and a small cloth scuff at the bottom of the front cover of vol III. Bright gilt lettering on the front covers and spines. Volumes II and III are tightly bound with no cracks and no loose pages - all covers are firmly attached. Volume I has a small 2" crack at the front hinge between the end paper and pastedown resulting in the front cover being a bit shaky; the back cover is firmly attached. Nice interiors - the text pages of all 3 volumes are clean with only the year "1886" written in pencil at the outer margin of page 374 in vol I. The front end papers of each volume have a name stamped ink, a name written in ink, and a Harvard College "Gifts & Exchange" ink stamp dated 1993. The front end paper and pastedown of vol II has a few small bits of paper remnants and glue remainder (as if something had been adhered to the pages, then removed). Overall the set is in Very Good condition. Seller Inventory # ABE-1722969292060

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book chronicles the rise and fall of the Slave Power in the United States, a political force that pushed its agenda through legislation and wielded significant influence over the national diplomacy and military, all in the service of perpetuating slavery. The author argues that the Slave Power was ultimately responsible for the outbreak of the Mexican-American War, as it sought new territories to expand its reach. The war is examined in detail, including the political debates surrounding it, the battles fought, and the consequences for both the United States and Mexico. The author also analyzes the impact of the war on the institution of slavery, showing how it deepened the divisions between the North and South and set the stage for the Civil War. Ultimately, this book sheds light on the complex and tragic history of slavery in the United States and its profound impact on the nation's development. It examines the role of slavery in the admission of Florida and the Mexican War. It details Congress's actions in declaring war with Mexico and the subsequent Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which acquired territory for the United States without restrictions on slavery.
